Safari x Egg London - Basement Takeover, 20th October 2017
On Friday the 20th October we returned to the Egg LDN Basement, this time for the rapidly evolving brand Safari. We’ve kept a close eye on Safari since their conception, spectating as they’ve grown in prowess and significance on the Kent scene with each event. Pulling together a solid group of residents and guests who consistently deliver memorable events; resulting in a strong following from ravers, DJs and venues. Word of the brand has recently cascaded into Europe, with Safari approached by the Netherland’s famous Spring Break Festival Amsterdam, to host a number of parties in their upcoming instalment next April; One of the Safari’s biggest achievements to date. For now in London, we’ve previously seen Safari host a successful party at Egg however in their Terrace room. We couldn't wait to see what the boys would bring to the thumping sound system of the Basement.

DJ Sets
Matt Dennis b2b ELDE
The opening set saw the London based duo ELDE, team up with Matt Dennis, a solo artist from Brighton to bring you an opening set that was perfect for the occasion. They came in all guns blazing, hitting us with banger after banger through the Basement’s incredible sound system. The crowd kept building until the room was packed out within the first 45minutes of opening (no easy task considering all rooms were open). Max Chapman's absolute stomper of a track, "La Fiesta" pumped it’s way into the close-walled room, delivering a sign of things to come in the night ahead. Russ Yallop's remix of a new release from Toyboy & Robin, "Palace" sent chills down your spine with some powerful vocals. This was a great opening set and we'd love to see the trio team up again.
Atlas 808 b2b Cadence
Next up was the Safari head honcho playing alongside the tribal genius that is Cadence. The sort of set that makes the hairs stand on your skin, two of the longest serving residents bouncing off each other in perfect synchronisation. Keeping the drops heavy and the tempo high paced, the crowd were instantly drawn into their set and loving every moment. A standout track and personal favourite of ours was Catz 'N Dogz remix of "Woman Of The Ghetto" by Marlena Shaw, with the gentle vocals leading into a fast paced acid drop, it was met by an emphatic reception by the crowd - who were now locked into Safari’s showcase.
Alex Niechoj b2b Micky Crist
Between them the Kent based DJs Alex & Micky have an abundance of experience, playing a instrumental role in the emerging tech house offering in Kent. With Alex having previously played many times for Safari and at Egg, knowing exactly what the local crowd would be after and Micky featuring worldwide for Kinky Malinki; this set was bound to be popping. They kept the ravers dancing until the early hours with their strong repertoire of tracks. Tapesh & Lunoize - "Slope Shit" and Francesco Dinoia - "Take It Back" standing out for us, two wicked tech house bangers energising the crowd to push on into the night. The set clearly also resonating with the crowd, as when we caught up with Alex & Micky, one raver even asked for a photo! Celebrity status boys!?
Overall
We thoroughly enjoyed our night at Egg LDN for the Safari Basement takeover. We've said it before, they certainly know how to throw a party and this was no exception. Once again selecting the ideal DJs to suit the environment, who performed to their full potential. The acquisition of Spring Break Amsterdam we’re confident will prove to be a sign of further developments on the horizon, as the brand continues to expand. 8/10.
