City Sound Project : Haynes & Friends at The Cuban Alleyway Canterbury, 30th April
The second instalment of our bank holiday weekend was
Haynes & Friends in the alleyway at The Cuban, Canterbury. No strangers to the venue after hosting previous events in the past year Haynes & Friends marked their 2017 return to the The Cuban but with an exciting new twist to the event space making use of street to create an intimate daytime vibe.
Haynes & Friends are always making the most of
local talent and giving them a chance to impress on big stages like Egg LDN. This time round the DJs on the day were: Two White Boys,
Mark Derry, Spike O'Connell, FGTN Toys, Tommie-lee & Liam Haynes and APOLLO
84 as their headliner.
Venue :
This bank holiday weekend was the first time The
Cuban had used their alleyway to host events. It is a long and narrow space
capable of holding around 250-300 people. Open aired and perfect for summertime.
Bar Staff - Bar
staff at The Cuban are polite, patient and provided quick service. Only ever
waiting a couple of minutes to be served.
Drinks - Drinks prices were average for this type of
event. Beers from £4-5, Water & Soft Drinks were £3 and Spirits &
Mixers were around £5 for a single.
Heat - As an outdoor event we can't review the climate of
the venue. Although the weather held out for a while until it got to the
evening time where there was some light drizzle but the staff at The Cuban were
quick to bring out big parasols to cover the DJ booth and part of the alleyway.
Crowd - The crowd was a pleasure to be a part of,
creating a feel good vibe, grooving and just enjoying themselves thoroughly.
Production/Sound :
Production - In terms of production it was simple but
effective, the majority of the lighting coming close the the DJ area with a few moving head lights placed above the DJ decks as well as some free standing vertical projectors that lit the length of the alleyway.
Co2 cannons also added a great effect to all the DJ sets at key points.
Sound - The sound was provided by the popular outdoor sound system Funktion One. Booming sound filled most of the alleyway, but could've benefited some more speakers further to the back of the alley as the sound did start to
get a little quiet.
DJ Sets :
Two White Boys were up first, this was their debut set.
For a debut set they certainly impressed with the boys really setting the tone
for the day ahead. Their set brought a great vibe to the event, two tracks
stood out that really got the crowd going: Gorillaz - Ascension (Nic Fanciulli
Remix) & Franky Rizardo - Same Man (James Curd Remix).
Mark Derry & Spike O'Connell were next carrying on
where Two White Boys left off bringing some bass heavy tech house to the day.
They lifted the crowd and really got everyone pumped with "Camelphat -
Hangin' Out With Charlie".
Next up were FGTN Toys, always a pleasure to watch. They
played a very groovy disco set, with some vocal tracks added in too for extra
effect. Nothing but a feel good vibe from two of the nicest guys in the
industry!
FGTN Toys passed over to APOLLO 84 and he blew us away.
APOLLO 84 took over the decks in style playing some thumping tech house, really
taking it to the next level with his set. The crowd really took to APOLLO, even
with the rain drizzling down the crowd was not fazed as he had them dancing the
night away.
Finally the head honchos of Haynes & Friends,
Tommie-lee and Liam Haynes. The two brothers from Medway, Kent played a
phenomenal set, easily the best set we've seen them play together so far.
Despite the rain continuing, nobody wanted to leave the alleyway. With a
variety of tracks, from tech house to vocal disco, the crowd stayed grooving
till the very end. Everybody singing and dancing, thoroughly enjoying the set.
Finishing strongly with Tommie's latest track "Show Me" which has
starred as one of our Tracks of the week, followed by a rapturous round of
applause.
Overall :
We thoroughly enjoyed this event and will
definitely be attending the next Haynes & Friends party. All the DJs
performed to the highest standard, the venue was intimate and the music was pumping!
The weather wasn't going to dampen the mood on this day! 4.5/5 RAVE ON!
